Tohoku Explorer Tour

FULLY GUIDED & HOSTED LIFT ASSISTED BACKCOUNTRY TOURING

NEW FOR 2027!

New for this year we are adding an extra two nights onto our popular backcountry tour so we can take a lucky few on a road trip to the Akita area.

We have found some amazing terrain and special experiences during our many years running group tours in the Tohoku region and the Akita prefecture stands out as one of these special regions. Very few know about it but rumours of how good this area is are starting to circle in the snow community and we are here to tell you that it’s true – but you have to know where to look!

Wilderness defines Akita, with forest covering 72% of the prefecture. While the region is known for its bears, they will luckily be in hibernation during our visit!

For the first nights of the tour you will be based in the heart of Morioka City where you have quick access to ski resorts and backcountry zones surrounding Mt Iwate and beyond, all within a maximum 1.5hr drive. At night you’ll get to wander the streets and alleys of Morioka enjoying the area’s delicious food and hospitality.

The tour will then track west to the little known Akita prefecture and your base in Tazawako. Basing ourselves in Tazawako will allow us to reach the remote Ani ski area. However, if the weather shuts that dream down for a day we have nearby options that are epic in their own right.

For the last 3 nights you will base yourself in Kuroishi and the delightful Azumashiya Hotel. Located on the banks of the Asaseishi River, Fukushi-san and his family will take great care of you with delicious kaiseki (multi-course) meals and you’ll have time to relax in their rejuvenating onsen. From there we can access Aomori Springs and Mt Iwaki as well as the famous Mt Hakkoda. The Aomori region is one of the snowiest areas in Japan – get those pow skis and boards ready!
