Cat ski in Colorado

Winter storms sweep across the western deserts of the US to unload their light and dry snow on the first mountains they encounter known as the West Elk range, home of Eleven’s cat skiing terrain.  Located just 13 miles west of Crested Butte, Irwin is a meteorological anomaly, often seeing twice the amount of snow as the resort, averaging nearly 450 inches a season. This means seriously deep powder only reachable by snowcat or snowmobile.

Once you step off the cat and onto Scarp Ridge, it’s go time.

Our local partners, Eleven, provide unrivalled experiences in Colorado, and you will love every moment on this trip, from the chef-prepared breakfasts to enjoying après cocktails in their rooftop hot tub, ripping fresh lines all day in between.

You’ll ski every day, and during storm days hit protected trees and glades for better visibility. Once you step off the cat and onto Scarp Ridge, it’s go time.

Eleven’s operation rivals the likes of the Wasatch range in Utah or British Columbia, and they have an active avalanche forecasting and mitigation program, which uses explosives for testing slopes. This keeps you skiing steep terrain consistently and confidently.

You will typically snag 8-10 runs per day, breaking for lunch. Expect après cocktails and snacks at the on-mountain chalet at day’s end. Three guides per group allow Eleven to split the group and ski varying terrain.

What you need to know

WHAT IS A SNOWCAT? WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT ELEVEN’S SNOWCATS?

A snowcat is an enclosed vehicle used to drive up and down the mountain so that you can access untouched terrain for the best possible skiing conditions. Our snowcats are custom built with your comfort in mind – think leather seats, flat-screen TVs, heat, sound systems and large windows.

WHERE IS IRWIN COLORADO? HOW DO WE GET THERE?

Irwin is located 12 miles west of Crested Butte. The snowcat will pick you up at the front door of Scarp Ridge Lodge or Sopris House. You’ll enjoy a 45-minute ride through the wilderness to Irwin.

DO WE HAVE A HOME BASE AT IRWIN? WHERE DO WE HAVE LUNCH?

We have two cozy on-mountain chalets at Irwin where your group will put on your ski boots, have lunch and enjoy après. You’re also welcome to hang out at the cabins throughout the day if you want to take a break or lounge by the fire.

HOW MUCH SNOW DOES IRWIN GET EACH YEAR?

Irwin is famous for its cold-smoke powder – and lots of it. The area receives an average of 450 inches of snow each year.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE TERRAIN AT IRWIN?

Irwin offers a variety of terrain. Think open alpine bowls, steep narrow chutes, wide untouched hillsides, and tight tree skiing terrain. While we find our terrain is best suited for intermediate to expert skiers, our guides are well versed in working with children and skiers of varying abilities.

Historically a mining and ranching community, Crested Butte, which sits 8,885ft above sea level, saw a revival in the 1960s when a ski resort opened on Mt. Crested Butte. This national historic district has been dubbed “Colorado’s Last Great Ski Town.” Averaging 300 inches of snow per year, with almost twice that just outside of town at our cat ski area, Crested Butte is the perfect place to stage your next winter adventure.

Known as the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado,” Crested Butte summers have a lot to offer. From the Wildflower Festival to the Film Festival, there is no shortage of cultural and outdoor pursuits. Crested Butte is considered the mountain biking mecca of the world and boasts the largest single-track trail system in the United States with more than 750 miles of track to be had. With other activities on tap such as hiking, fishing and rock climbing, this area provides many opportunities to get out and explore.

Guest-controlled Crestron entertainment systems are set to music preferences, while coffee and a pre-heated sauna each morning are prep for tackling the trails.
