Head off for 5 days of touring in the Arrowsmith Ranges out of Methven or the Mt Cook Area, touring areas include the Tasman, Murchison, Mannering, Aida, Fox and Franz Josef glaciers. There are many non-technical ascents leading to some incredible downhill turns. The location will be dependent on weather to get the best possible conditions.

Mt Cook Touring
For 5 days you’ll tour in the biggest range in New Zealand, this adventure puts you amongst the remote glaciers and nevés of Aoraki Mt Cook and Westland regions. Perfect for skiers and splitboarders  wanting to experience the high mountains with endless options for touring deep glacial bowls and challenging descents. Tours are based out of the regions network of alpine huts, you will fly in, set up base, then head out and explore.

Arrowsmith Touring
Your trip will start with Methven Heliski will fly you in by helicopter to Cameron Hut nestled beneath the peak of Mt Arrowsmith. For 5 days you’ll tour in this high alpine area, ascend peaks and get some of the best skiing of your life. Basic instruction will also be included, such as uphill skinning technique, avalanche transceiver searches, route selection, and assessing avalanche terrain.

Unlike other tour companies your local NZMGA certified guides will host you everyday on these tours. It takes a special person to work as a mountain guide. Even after a long day in the mountains there are still meals to be cooked, plans to be laid, and tales to be told…

SKILL LEVEL: Advanced and above. This tour is open to those who are new to ski/split-board touring, are advanced skiers/snowboarder’s and have a good level of aerobic fitness.

EXAMPLE ITINERARY

Arrival Day
For Arrowsmith Touring you will be transferred from Christchurch Airport according to your flight. For Mt Cook Touring you have a pick up option of either Queenstown or Christchurch. Your first night will be at with Breckenridge lodge or Lake Ohau Lodge. Please see transfer times below.

 

Touring days can include the following options:

Day 1 – 5
We start our journey into the touring zones being dropped in by Heli .We base the 5-day tours from comfortable Huts, situated beneath the peaks of Mount Arrowsmith or Mt Cook. Warm and comfortable venue (with lighting) and close to numerous touring options.

 

Mt Cook
Liebigs offer a great range of ski runs (from beginner to expert), with uphill routes linking three major valley systems ( Murchison, Jollie, and Cass) – as well as numerous smaller basins and peaks.

The top elevation on most of the runs is 2,200 – 2,400 metres. We have many lines to ski in times of good stability, with safe options available if the hazard is high. Options exist (in close proximity) to ski powder, or corn, according to prevailing conditions.

 

Arrowsmith
We will head to ascend the Cameron Glacier to Jagged Col. Great views and a 1000 metre descent! An ascent of Peg Col from Cameron Hut where options for great ski runs or a descent into Jagged Stream and returning to the hut via the Cameron Glacier. A visit to the South Ashburton Glacier via Speen Stream, ascend the glacier and experience an 1,100 metre ski decent directly to the hut. Ski touring in the Marquee region. This area offers spectacular views into the Rakaia and many great options for ski descents.

 

Day 5
After this day we will head back to Methven or Ohau  at 5pm ready for a hot tub and a cold beer!

 

Day 6
Time to say goodbye head to Christchurch or Queenstown and take a jet plane back to reality.

 Mt Cook

Aoraki/Mount Cook and Westland National Parks. This region provides the most extensive highest alpine backcountry skiing in NZ. Read more about mountain hut living conditions here on the FAQ.

Locations most often used are at the head of the Tasman (Tasman Saddle Hut, Kelman Hut) or Murchison Glaciers (Murchison Hut), Pioneer Hut at the head of the Fox Glacier, and Centennial Hut at the head of the Franz Josef Glacier.

The Arrowsmiths

The Arrowsmith area offers spectacular high-alpine ski touring, in both glaciated and non-glaciated terrain. There are a range of options for differing levels of fitness and skills.

Ski touring in the Cameron Glacier to Jagged Col and Peg Col from Cameron Hut. South Ashburton Glacier via Speen Stream. Ascend the glacier and experience an 1,100 metre ski descent directly to the hut.  Marquee region offers spectacular views into the Rakaia and many great options for ski descents.

Cheeseman

Mt Cheeseman is a club ski area with a difference. It has a distinctive friendly vibe as well as offering diverse terrain for all abilities and loads of great facilities. The top of the Main T-bar lift has plenty of wide-open groomed trails and The Ridge T-bar lift takes you to the top offering challenging off-piste skiing with spectacular views. Those after a powder fix can head to the shaded face below Mt Cockayne or along Ridge Run to Sunny Face. The Ridge T-Bar offers access to Tarn Basin, a popular touring option outside the ski area boundary for back-country enthusiasts

The licenced day lodge with Cockayne Café, ticket office, gear hire and plenty of storage for bags etc. The sunny deck out front is perfect to watch the action while you enjoy a fresh espresso coffee.

 

Methven Heli 

Methven Heliski’s territory (the “Arrowsmiths”) spans 3 mountain ranges, The Arrowsmith, Ragged, and Palmer Ranges. These mountains have some of New Zealand’s best Heliski terrain:
– Over 1,000 square km of mountains to roam

Ohau

O’ how we love to ski at Ohau! Lake Ohau in the Mackenzie High Country is cradled between the Ohau Range to the west in the Main Divide and the Ben Ohau range to the east.  In summer it is endowed with fine weather and long daylight hours and in winter with reliable snow. There is some great hiking around the tops for the more adventurous accessing the best powder snow and the views from there are magnificent and definitely worth the effort. At the end of a great day in the mountains, there is nothing better than knowing you’re only 20 minutes from a hot spa with a gluhwein in your hand or a cold beer in the bar.  You will leave relaxed and revived!

O how we love to ski! Lake Ohau in the Mackenzie High Country is cradled between the Ohau Range to the west in the Main Divide and the Ben Ohau range to the east.  In summer it is endowed with fine weather and long daylight hours and in winter with reliable snow.

Explore the surrounding nature and enjoy friendly hospitality with great food and classically stylish It is a 20 minute drive from Lake Ohau Lodge to the Snow Fields.   From the 9.6km access road, the views up the valley to Aoraki Mount Cook and overlooking Lake Ohau are spectacular.

There is some great hiking around the tops for the more adventurous accessing the best powder snow and the views from there are really magnificent and definitely worth the effort.

At the end of a great day in the mountains, there is nothing better than knowing you’re only 20 minutes from a hot spa with a gluhwein in your hand or a cold beer in the bar.  You will leave relaxed and revived!

 

 

Cameron HutIMG_4705

The Cameron Hut first established in 1952 (carried in by a team of CMC members over several days, then rebuilt in1982, this time it was prefabricated and flown in by helicopter). The hut is sited in a glacial basin under the Arrowsmith Ranges at approximately 1275m . The hut has 9 bunks with foam mattresses, stainless steel bench top, solar lighting, mountain radio, area map, fire extinguisher and blanket, rainwater tank & outside Norski toilet.

Private hut in the Liebig’s at Mt Cook, a fantastic base10 bunk hut with pot-belly stove to come back to after a big day in the hills.

Choosing your clothing | Seasonal Variation

Our gear lists cater for all eventualities. Sometimes you may not require everything on the equipment list. Weather and conditions when your trip starts will help determine what is needed.

Always pack for cold conditions. A 4-season sleeping bag, down jacket, and heavy grade thermal layers are required.
